Sweaters and Thermostats

sweatersI was checking out some twitter comments and read “Lower your thermostat and wear socks and a sweater-Lowering the thermostat by just one deg can reduce energy use by 3%” and it reminded me of my engineer father who went one better. When my older sisters complained about being cold in the house, my Dad would tell them to put on a sweater and then turn up the thermostat a degree or two. My sisters did what he said and everyone was happy and warm. Years later, after my father died, we had to replace the furnace. The furnace repair guy came upstairs from the basement after checking on the old furnace and told my mother that the furnace was not connected to the upstairs thermostat. It never had been!
